between systems and grounds was invited as part of the Society of Fellows of the American Academy in Rome to present their work in both a lecture and performance. For the performance, we decided to interlink three spaces – each of our studios (Des Moines & Middletown) to the third space of the Cryptoporticus located on the lower level of the American Academy in Rome. The Cryptoporticus introduced its own reverberations to the improvisation, as well as the occasional ambient sounds of life at the AAR.
Special thanks to Anna Serrota and Molissa Fenley for inviting us to participate, and to Jean Dommeruth for the invaluable technical assistance in linking in the Cryptoporticus.
The two tracks here also became the A and B sides for the vinyl release of the overshot sessions (Carrier Records). This special limited edition vinyl featured hand-flocked patterns overlaid with the audio of the weaving files generated as part of these sessions. The combination of these materials creates superimposed rhythms from the transposed fabric as the audio needle bounces over grooves of the record. Special thanks to Trey Reis and Phillip Young for hand cutting the vinyl. The audio uploaded here features the uninterrupted audio of those tracks.
